Your guide to Wynyard
Welcome to Wynyard
Renowned for its springtime tulips, the seaside town of Wynyard sits at the mouth of the Inglis River in Tasmania’s northwest. Wynyard may be a small, unassuming town, but it’s big on attractions, with top sights and activities including the Wonders of Wynyard veteran car collection, a scenic golf course set on a peninsula, swimming beaches, riverside walking trails, good fishing opportunities, and the huge sandstone cliffs at Fossil Bluff, which reveal a treasure trove of prehistoric fossils.
Wynyard is also a convenient base for exploring nearby attractions to the northwest, including Table Cape, the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano offering superb views of Tasmania’s north coast and tulip farms; the pretty coastal settlements of Boat Harbour Beach and Sisters Beach; and the spectacular surrounds of Rocky Cape National Park. The regional centre of Burnie, which has plenty of attractions of its own, is also just a 20-minute drive to the southeast.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Wynyard
Wynyard’s tulips burst into bloom in spring, making this a beautiful time to visit. Wynyard celebrates tulip season with a Tulip Festival in October — a multi-week event culminating in a huge day of festivities. The region’s main tulip farm also opens to visitors from September to late October, allowing you to wander between its dazzling rows of blooms on Table Cape, and purchase fresh tulips and bulbs to take home. As the weather warms up over summer, the beaches of Wynyard and Boat Harbour to the northwest are the places to be. It’s also a beautiful time of year for a round of golf, surrounded by the sea. On the first and third Sunday of every month throughout the year, shop for local produce and arts and crafts at the Wynyard Foreshore Markets along the East Wynyard foreshore.
Top things to do in Wynyard
Rocky Cape National Park
Striking coastal rock formations, a spectacular array of flowering plants, and significant Aboriginal heritage all make Rocky Cape National Park, a 30-minute drive northwest of Wynyard, worth exploring. With seven marked trails to choose from, there are plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs here.
Dip Falls
Just an hour’s drive west of Wynyard, Dip Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in northwest Tasmania, with several viewing points easily accessible from the car park. Another five minutes down the road, you can also visit the Big Tree — an enormous stringybark thought to be more than 400 years old.
Stanley
Nestled under the imposing volcanic plug known as the Nut, the charming town of Stanley lies just 45 minutes’ drive northwest of Wynyard. After enjoying Stanley’s famous fish and chips, hike or take the chairlift to the top of the Nut for sweeping coastal views. Sign up for a historical tour in town, or simply enjoy wandering Stanley’s streets lined with quaint stone cottages.
