Great Lake: Unique, Secluded and Breathtaking Highland Views

EstherRating, 5 stars2 months ago
Kate's place was a fabulous place to stay with my doggo. One of the most generously well-equipped kitchen's I've experienced, super comfortable beds, warm and homely and a stunning view across the lake! Kate is a wonderfully warm and kind host, easy and responsive communication. I highly recommend Kate's place and will definitely stay again.

Mirramar Holiday House

DebraRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Andrea is an excellent host and the accommodation was top-notch. Dogs were allowed and well-catered for, which was a deal-breaker for my father and his constant companion! Everything we needed was there, and it was lovely to relax in the sunny living room with a view of the river.

Your guide to Triabunna

All About Triabunna

Triabunna is a pretty port town around 90 kilometres northeast of the Tasmanian capital of Hobart. It sits within Spring Bay and boasts sandy beaches with pristine waters that are known for producing some of the best mussels in the world. This city is also the gateway to some of Tasmania's most beautiful natural wonders like Maria Island National Park.

Triabunna also offers shops, galleries, and tearooms to explore, and the local marina is the place to go for eateries offering a variety of daily seafood options pulled straight from the local waters. Enjoy a fresh serving of fish and chips or mussels while you take in the beautiful views of the bay.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Triabunna

A summer visit will offer up warm days perfect for exploring the region and enjoying a swim along the beaches of Spring Bay. Another pleasant time to visit is between September and November and in March, when the days are mostly sunny, and the nights are mild. The town holds a community market on the third Sunday in each month with a range of stalls selling secondhand books, crafts, locally-made jams and preserves, and seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables. In August, the stargazing event known as Nocturna celebrates the area’s pristine dark skies with scientific talks, live music, and food and drinks. Winter in Triabunna can get very cold though, so remember to pack plenty of layers. Whenever you decide to visit, you will find a good range of Triabunna accommodation to suit all tastes and needs.

Top things to do in Triabunna

Maria Island National Park

Just a 30-minute ferry ride from Triabunna across the Mercury Passage, Maria Island National Park is an untouched natural area with no residents or cars, making it a haven for local wildlife like kangaroos and wombats. Here you will also find ruins of the abandoned convict township of Darlington, which was set up as a penal colony in the early 1800s. The best way to explore is by bike, and you can bring your own or hire one on the island. The Painted Cliffs — brightly coloured and naturally carved sandstone rock formations — are a park highlight.

Spring Beach

Spring Beach is a picturesque inlet bordered by imposing sandstone cliffs at either side, which makes for calm waters that are perfect for swimmers of all abilities. Once you’ve taken a dip, you can follow the scenic two-kilometre walk along the clifftop from Spring Beach to Shelly Beach and explore the rock pools and check out the old Prosser Bay sandstone quarry, which offers spectacular views.

Pelican Walk

The Pelican Walk is a great way to tour Triabunna, and it begins near the town’s marina. Head to the Visitor Centre to grab a map, and then you can take the self-guided Discovery Walk to see the preserved historic buildings. Along the way, you can also visit the Tasmanian Seafarers Memorial and browse the local shops and galleries. When you need a break, stop off for a coffee and snack in one of the cafes.
