Your guide to Ledge Point

All About Ledge Point

Located around 105 kilometres north of Perth in Western Australia, Ledge Point is a small, sleepy coastal township which caters to the local fishing and crayfishing industries. The town's name originates from the nearby rocky ledges on the point that were first described in an 1875 hydrographic survey.

The area is well known as a windsurfing venue, and in January each year the prestigious Ocean Classic, a four-day, 25-kilometre windsurfing marathon from Ledge Point to the town of Lancelin, draws competitors from around the world. This event has been held for over 30 years and brings not only the best windsurfers, but also offers competitive events for kitesurfers, jet skiers, beach runners and swimmers.

The gorgeous beaches at Ledge Point are white sand with turquoise water. The waves tend to be small, so it’s an ideal place for water sports, as well as fishing. For all automobile owners, there are even portions of the beach that allow four-wheel driving.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Ledge Point

In summer, the weather is perfect for making the most of the outdoor lifestyle in and around the area, with the sun shining strong for most of this season. January brings the area's largest event, with thousands of windsurfers and other water sport athletes for the Ocean Classic competition. Autumn has slightly lower temperatures, with pleasant days and cooler nights. Winter in Ledge Point can be rainy and is characterised by cooler days and chilly nights. Spring in Ledge Point is when the wildflowers in the surrounding landscape are in full bloom.

Top things to do in Ledge Point

Ledge Point Beach Fishing

This gorgeous white sand beach has many activities to offer. There are some terrific spots for beach fishing for small whiting, herring, and tailor fish. Approximately five kilometres south of Ledge Point, there is a reef section of beach, which also fishes well for tailor and the odd mulloway. Rent a boat and fish off the reef for mulloway, silver trevally, giant herring, and tailor as these fish tend to be in the whitewash of waves hitting the reefs. Further offshore produces some great fishing for pink snapper, samson fish, and silver trevally.

Sand Dunes in Lancelin

The sand dunes of Lancelin, 16 kilometres north of Ledge Point, offer a variety of activities like sandboarding, quad bikes, motorbiking, and a four-wheel drive adventure, on the hilly sands. These sand dunes, the biggest in Western Australia, are two kilometres long and there’s a panoramic outlook at the top of the dunes that points towards the town, surrounding farmland, sand hills, and coastline. For the best views, head there at dawn or dusk.

Pinnacles Desert

Only an hour’s drive up the coast from Ledge Point, the Pinnacles are mysterious natural limestone structures formed approximately 27,000 years ago. Over time, coastal winds have removed the surrounding sand and exposure to the elements has created the pillars. Native Australian wildlife like kangaroos and emus can also be spotted nearby, particularly early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
