The space
Originally built in 1864 by local bootmaker and saddler James Townsend, Bootmakers Cottage carries the charm and character of its past while offering the comforts of a relaxed country stay.
Inside, original details and vintage touches sit alongside cosy living spaces, a well-equipped kitchen and three inviting bedrooms with comfortable beds and quality linen. Gather around the wood fire, share meals together and enjoy a home designed for both connection and comfort.
- The Garden -
Beyond the cottage, a collection of outdoor spaces invites you to linger. A red-brick courtyard opens onto a cottage garden filled with grapevines, olives, citrus trees and herbs, with plenty of room to wander and explore. Spend lazy afternoons lounging on the day bed, enjoy long meals beneath the festoon lights, or toast marshmallows around the fire pit as the evening settles in.
The original stables and bootmaker’s workshop have been transformed into a private bar and retreat, complete with darts, board games, toys and space for everyone to unwind.
Set across half an acre, the property is also a wonderful escape for guests travelling with pets, offering room to enjoy the outdoors together.

With the charm of Birregurra at your doorstep, days can be as full or as slow as you choose. Wander the historic Main Street with its antique stores, cafés, local wine and produce shops, much-loved pub, new Otways Gin Distillery and renowned Brae Restaurant — just moments away.
Perfectly positioned between Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road and the Otway Ranges, Birregurra offers an abundance of natural beauty and adventure — from towering mountain ash and fern-filled rainforests to waterfalls, beaches, native wildlife and exceptional food and wine experiences.

Neighbourhood highlights
Set in the foothills of the Otways, Birregurra is a quietly beautiful historic village where country charm meets easy access to the coast. Just over an hour and a half from Melbourne and around 35 minutes from the Great Ocean Road, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, explore gently, and settle into the rhythm of regional Victoria.
One of Victoria’s best-preserved 1800s townships, Birregurra is filled with beautiful old buildings, churches and stories waiting to be discovered. Take a wander along the main street, browse the local shops, and soak up the peaceful pace of village life — sleepy midweek, with a little more energy on weekends.
Beyond town, the Otway Ranges offer some of Australia’s most enchanting rainforest landscapes. Spend your days exploring towering forests, ancient plant life, fern-lined tracks and hidden waterfalls, or head to Forrest for world-class mountain bike trails, walking tracks and the local brewery.
For those who love good food, Birregurra is home to some of the region’s most celebrated dining experiences. Brae (a regular on the World's 50 Best Restaurants List) is a destination in its own right, with its acclaimed degustation menu and thoughtful connection to place, while Yield Restaurant is just a short walk from the cottage. We recommend booking well ahead, and can make recommendations for transport to and from Brae.
If you haven’t discovered this corner of the world yet, we think you’re in for a treat. There’s plenty to explore, from quiet country roads and local produce to rainforest adventures and coastal escapes. After booking, we’ll share our local guide with our favourite places to eat, wander and discover.
