The Holiday House Fraser Island

RobertRating, 5 stars2 months ago
Great sized house for a large group, nice open plan with plenty of space. The kitchen is big and well equipped although some of the appliances and pots and pans need updating. Like most Airbnb's there is never enough toilet paper, washing detergent or tea towels so be sure to bring your own. Beautiful views from the large balcony, a great way to relax and watch the sunset of an afternoon. We always love staying within the Kingfisher Resort, it's great to be able to use the resort pool and very close to do day trips to Lake McKenzie. Overall, we loved the house and would definitely stay again.

Beachside Cottage, near beach in central location

We found Emma’s little green cottage very quirky and cute. It met our needs as we were affected by the recent flooding in Hervey Bay. As we have a little black pug we were very lucky that Emma allowed pets in her cottage. Fantastic location also.

Your guide to Orchid Beach

All About Orchid Beach

Orchid Beach is a popular holiday destination on the northern part of the World Heritage-listed Fraser Island near Hervey Bay. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and is the only place on Earth where you will see tall, ancient rain forests growing from sand dunes. With more than 250 kilometres of coastline, coloured sand cliffs, spectacular lakes, and an abundance of local wildlife, there is an abundance of natural beauty to enjoy on Fraser Island.

Orchid Beach itself boasts almost 15 kilometres of white sandy beach and its calm, clear waters make it popular for boating and swimming. The town is an ideal base for a more relaxing stay on Fraser Island, as it offers peaceful seclusion while still being close to most of the stunning attractions including Champagne Pools, Ocean Lake, Orange Creek, Platypus Bay, and the Cape Lighthouse. Dining options here are limited, but it’s hard to beat the town’s fresh seafood and oceanside pubs.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Orchid Beach

The most pleasant time to visit is during the spring and autumn months when the days are warm and filled with sunshine and the nights are milder, making it perfect for exploring everything the island has to offer. In summer the temperature does rise a little on the island, but it is the increase in humidity that is most noticeable. Fraser Island experiences a tropical climate, so expect long, hot humid days and nights as well as an increased risk of rainfall. There isn’t really much of a conventional winter on the island, but it does get cooler. However, there is still plenty of sunshine to enjoy during this time of year, and the humidity and rainfall is much lower. Whenever you decide to visit, you’ll find a great range of Orchid Beach accommodation on Fraser Island to suit all tastes and budgets.

Top things to do in Orchid Beach

Lake McKenzie

Fraser Island is home to over 40 freshwater lakes, but the most unique is McKenzie Lake. It boasts crystal clear blue water and soft white sand that squeaks when you walk on it. The lake’s water is so transparent it’s almost like you’re swimming in a pool. This is due to it being a perched lake, meaning it is only filled with rainwater and is not fed by streams or creeks, creating the clear blue water effect. The lake is also surrounded by ancient rainforests making for a truly beautiful natural experience.

Indian Head

Take a trip out to the far northern end of 75 Mile Beach to Indian Head, the island's most easterly point. From here you’ll have breathtaking panoramic views of the island’s coastline and rolling dunes. This is also a great place to find local wildlife along the shore — and depending on the season, you could spot bluefish, manta rays, sharks, whales, dolphins, and turtles. There’s also a chance you’ll come across the island’s protected dingoes, but be sure to keep a safe distance.

75 Mile Beach

Book a four-wheel drive vehicle and take a journey on the most iconic beach highway in the world. The Great Sandy Highway on Fraser Island’s 75 Mile Beach has its own road signs, speed limits, and even speed cameras. Along the way you will find many spots of interest to stop and explore including the swimmable Champagne Pools and Eli Creek, but due to the dangerous riptides and high presence of sharks in the open waters, it’s best to avoid a dip in the ocean here.
