Your guide to Foster
All About Foster
A gateway to Gippsland's spectacular natural attractions, the picturesque town of Foster is just 30 minutes from Wilsons Promontory National Park, and a short drive to other popular destinations including Shallow Inlet, Corner Inlet, Sandy Point, Waratah Bay and Victoria’s highest waterfall, Agnes Fall. Foster is also the major service town for the region with many shops, fresh produce stores, cafes, and bakeries.
Foster was founded in 1871 after a mini gold rush in the area, and there are memorials to commemorate the town's gold mining history in Pearl Park. Across from the park, in the town’s former post office is Foster’s historical museum, featuring displays of the region's gold history. The Hayes Walking track in town will lead you to the site of Victory Mine, Foster’s largest gold mine. The region is also known for its highly acclaimed cheeses, cool climate wines, craft beers, preserves, and fruit and vegetables. All this local produce can be enjoyed at the wineries and farm shops throughout the region, as well as at many weekend markets.
The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Foster
Spring and early autumn is a pleasant time to be in the area, when the days are mostly warm and sunny, and the nights are mild. In March, The Prom Coastal festival takes place in towns all over the region, celebrating the arts and fine food of Wilsons Promontory and its surroundings. There’s also live performances, music, exhibitions, and markets. Summer in the region will generally offer warm days and nights to enjoy outdoor activities and the beaches in the area. Just be aware that the weather can be changeable in this part of the world, even in summer — so it’s a good idea to pack a coat, along with a hat and sunscreen. Whenever you visit, you’ll find a great range of accommodations in Foster and other towns in this region of Victoria.
Top things to do in Foster
Wilsons Promontory
There are more than 130 kilometres of tracks to explore in Wilsons Promontory, with dozens of short walks and day walks, as well as overnight hiking trails for more intrepid walkers. The Tidal River to Squeaky Beach walk will take around 50 minutes one way and presents some of the loveliest views the Prom has to offer. Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk is an easy walk through eucalypt forest and rainforest, with an accessible boardwalk for people with disabilities.
Agnes Falls
Take the 20-minute drive from Foster to the highest single span falls in Victoria. From the car park it’s an easy 200-metre walk to a viewing area overlooking the falls, with seating areas to enjoy the spectacular view of the falls and the gorge. The Agnes Falls Scenic Reserve is home to an abundance of birdlife. Check out the playful stunts of the grey fantail spiraling in and out of trees and listen out for the famous calls of the laughing kookaburra and crimson rosella.
Foster Lookouts
Visit the town's major lookouts — Foster North Lookout and Mount Nicholl Lookout — for magnificent views over Corner Inlet to the peaks of Wilsons Promontory National Park. The views from both these lookouts are spectacular and extend from the impressive towering wind turbines at Toora, across to Corner Inlet and Wilson’s Promontory, to the rolling sand dunes at Shallow Inlet and the islands beyond.
