Handcrafted strawbale house-10 min CBD, ferry, air

I've always wondered about straw bale houses - the walls were certainly thick and sound proofing (though the between floors aren't always!) - but what really sold me on this place was the views over the Mersey. It's easy to sit out for hours with a book and be visited by yellow-tailed cockies (who raided the neighbouring fruit trees), blue wren, native hens, bunnies and small wallabies. The accommodation has a lot of character, with the re-purposed brass vanity basin and lead-light in the bathroom; the copper bench top in the kitchen; and delightful door/drawer handles and hooks that were sculptures of the heads of hares! Devonport shopping is not far away, and it's quick and easy to get to/from the ferry terminal in east Devonport.

We had a truly memorable Easter weekend at By the Mercey. From the moment we arrived, we felt incredibly welcomed, Evelyne and Richard even came by to greet us personally, and had left a beautiful handwritten note along with a thoughtfully curated welcome book full of local highlights and nature photography. The views overlooking the Mercey River and Devonport were absolutely stunning, and the house itself was spotless and cozy. My wife, daughter, and son all felt so comfortable and relaxed throughout our stay. The location was peaceful and scenic, yet only minutes from shops, parks, and just a 5-minute drive from the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, which made our travel super easy. It was the perfect little escape for our family, and we’d absolutely love to come back again. Thanks Evelyne and Richard.
