The beachside community of Newport is a suburb north of Sydney that sits along the warm coastal waters of the South Pacific. Sandwiched between two bodies of water, the Tasmania Sea to the east and Pittwater harbour to the west, Newport hosts surfing, swimming, kayaking, fishing, and diving, among several other water-based recreational opportunities. Nearby national parks and protected Aboriginal cultural sites are within a short distance of the town and make for an excellent day trip that can include hiking, bird watching, and picnics on the beach.

When spending time in town, the village center of Newport has several cafes and restaurants to choose from that range from pizza and regionally inspired seafood to espresso bars with a bohemian flair. In addition to the selection of culinary options available, numerous stores specializing in artisanal goods, boutique clothing shops, and art galleries can be found throughout the area.

The temperate coastal climate of Newport is marked by relatively stable levels of humidity and precipitation throughout the year, with only moderate swings in temperature between the seasons. Due to the area's primary attractions consisting of coastal activities and the adjacent national parks, the summer months are an excellent time to consider booking accommodations in Newport. The weather around this time provides conditions conducive to hiking and playing in the water with long sunny days and pleasantly warm temperatures. However, temperatures fall to a level considered by some to be too cold for swimming during the winter months. Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

With more than 350 Aboriginal sites located throughout the area, the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is one of the region's important cultural heritage sites. You can find rock carvings and evidence of Aboriginal occupation among the area's many walking paths that meander through the bush. In addition to the cultural sites, you’ll find a wide variety of plant and animal life with 160 species of bird that include eagles, pelicans, ducks, and crimson rosellas.

Pittwater

On the western edge of Newport is the Pittwater, a substantial body of water popular with boaters. Several inlets along its protected coastlines hold waterfalls, rocky lookouts, and secret beaches nestled among the dense palms and forests of the area. Several forms of watercraft are available to explore Pittwater, with kayaks and paddleboards, in particular, providing easy access to many of the area's best sites.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse

Built in 1881, the Barrenjoey Lighthouse sits at the northernmost tip of the Sydney municipality. It provides exceptional views of Broken Bay and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park across the water, in addition to whale watching opportunities between May and September. The hike to the lighthouse requires moderate fitness levels and will take you about 30 minutes each way from the parking area.
