The Guanabara Palace began to be built in 1853 by merchant José Machado Coelho, in a property known as Chácara do Rozo de Domingos Francisco de Araújo Rozo, which was the most beautiful country house on the street called Rua Guanabara (now Rua Pinheiro Machado) and that was private residence until 1860. It is currently used as the seat of the government of Rio de Janeiro, where it dispatches the governor and the staff of his office. To this day, the Imperial Family tries to regain possession of it (one of the oldest legal proceedings in the country).
