Casa Sol y Agua is a restored Spanish Mission cottage on Sydney Avenue — arches, high ceilings, timber floors, a four-poster main bedroom and a leafy garden. Ducted air-con. Starlink wifi and a 65-inch screen.

Walk to Umina Beach one way and the shops the other. No car required for a beach day. Bus stop at the house for Sydney and Woy Woy connections.

Built for a couple, a small family, or two-plus-three who want the beach without a tourist-strip house. Theme and quiet sit in the house; the beach is three minutes on foot.

Umina Beach (pronounced "you-MY-nuh," meaning "place of sleep" in the local Dharug Aboriginal language) sits on a natural peninsula about 85 km north of Sydney, framed by Brisbane Water National Park's rugged sandstone cliffs and wildflowers.

The area around our home feels quintessentially coastal. At one end of the street is Umina Beach - great for surfers and the littlies. The Umina Beach Life Saving club houses a cafe and restaurant. At the other end of the street is the Umina Beach shopping area - supermarkets, cafes, fast food, pharmacies and clothing stores.

My work: Restoring old homes
My love is to restore classic houses back to their former glory. My first project was one of Henry Gilbert Smith's original 1860s sandstone cottages in Whistler Street (which was then waterfront) in Manly, NSW, Australia. They are near the sea, have incredible character, beautiful gardens and produce incredible joy to stay in.
