Outdoor Adventure Awaits! Now offering Horse Treks!!
The Temple Cabins (North Point) is at the head of Lake Ohau right at the beginning of the Hopkins Valley. It's a very special part of the NZ Alps. This cabin features a skylight for stargazing from the loft!
Situated on a classic New Zealand high country station, the cabin gives it's guests access to one of the truly remote areas of the Southern Alps
Enjoy horse riding from our farm, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and much more
The space
The space is one combined living area, without doors or conventional rooms (except for the bathroom).
The cabin uses clever dividing walls to provide privacy between sleeping areas, but should be thought of a single open plan living space.
The cabin shares an access track with our other cabin. Each cabin is over 400 metres apart, and out of sight of each other.
Please note there is a 50 metre, slightly uphill walk from the carpark to the cabin.
Due to our location within a World Heritage Listed Dark Sky Reserve, there is no street lighting in our region. We recommend planning your arrival during daylight hours.
Guest access
You'll have the entire cabin to yourself, and have access to the National Park we adjoin. Parts of the farm are off limits for the safety of our guests and our livestock.
The cabin shares an access track with our other cabin. Each cabin is over 400 metres apart, and out of sight of each other.
Other things to note
**PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE BOOKING**
The Temple Cabins are located in a remote region, on a high country station. Access to and from requires some skills and knowledge of orienteering, driving on gravel roads, and familiarity of the AIRBNB APP to access directions and instructions. PLEASE DO NOT BOOK UNLESS YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THE ABOVE. We may not be suitable for everyone, please book at your own discretion.
ARE THERE WEATHER CONDITIONS WHERE THE ROAD ACCESS TO THE CABIN CAN BE CUT OFF?
We are in a remote area. As such the roads to and from us can (not common but possible) become blocked in unusual weather events due to high amounts of rain or snowfall. This is beyond our control. It is the guest's responsibility to keep track of upcoming weather events. In the event that an extreme weather event is predicted and the guest chooses to relocate elsewhere, we will accept a cancellation and issue a refund on any unused nights if notified before the checkout. A weather forecast from a reputable weather forecasting website must be used as documentation for the cancellation.
WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE IS BEST?
During months where we have the potential of snow (March through till Nov), we strongly advise that an AWD vehicle with some clearance be used to access the cabin, as the final bit of the track can be icy. We advise that chains should also be carried, if hiring a car, this is usually available from your hire car company.
WHAT IS THE SETTING LIKE? HOW ALONE ARE WE?
The Temple Cabins are on a working, remote high country station. The cabin is some 300 metres away from the homestead, and about 400 metres from another guest cabin. Both due to the geography is out of line of sight. However from time to time you may see or hear the workings of the farm in the distance, giving you an authentic high country experience!
IS A 4WD NEEDED TO ACCESS THE CABIN?
In normal conditions, the cabin can be accessed by a 2wd vehicle, you will just need to take sections of the road to us slowly. However, we do not recommend vehicles with low-set body kits. A small SUV with snow chains in winter is adequate. Typically, snow chains won’t be needed for the journey, but we highly recommend having them on-hand in winter. That being said, a 4wd will be more comfortable and enable you to access the cabin in more difficult conditions.
CAN WE HAVE OUTDOOR FIRES?
Our region is a high alpine desert environment, and we are a long distance from emergency services. Fire can spread quickly and with devastating results. The local fire authority has a complete fire ban in place and fires are via permit only. Severe local government penalties apply.
DO YOU ALLOW PETS?
Unfortunately, no. We are on a working sheep and beef station and we have to have a policy in place that prevents domestic pets from disturbing livestock
WHAT IS THE PHONE AND WIFI COVERAGE LIKE?
There is reasonable phone coverage in most parts around the cabin, but inside it is patchy. We supply high speed wifi in the cabin, so enabling wifi calling makes phone coverage much better.
WHERE IS THE CLOSEST GROCERY STORE?
Depending on your direction of travel, the closest towns are Twizel (North) and Omarama (South). Both are equal distance from the cabin (45 mins)
