Welcome to The Bivouac, a thoughtfully designed bush retreat near St Marys and Tasmania’s stunning East Coast beaches. Surrounded by nature, the cabin celebrates craft and place, with handmade ceramics, curated books and a well equipped kitchen. Evenings bring the gentle sounds of crickets and wildlife, with the occasional visit from Burt the possum. Complimentary WiFi is available, though guests are encouraged to slow down, unwind and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the bush.
The space
A bivouac is a simple shelter in the wilderness – a place to pause, restore, and prepare for the adventures ahead. The Bivouac has been created in that spirit: a quiet retreat immersed in the Tasmanian bush, designed for guests seeking stillness, beauty, and connection with nature.
Thoughtfully positioned to embrace its natural surroundings, the cabin invites the outdoors in while remaining conveniently close to the township of St Marys and just a short drive from some of Tasmania’s most celebrated East Coast beaches.
Inside, the space reflects a deep appreciation for craft, creativity, and place. The ceramics throughout the cabin have been hand-made by one of the owners, while the books have been carefully curated to celebrate Tasmania – its landscapes, stories, and spirit of adventure – offering inspiration for both quiet moments and future journeys. An indoor wood heater anchors the living space, offering warmth and atmosphere on cooler evenings.
The kitchen is well equipped with everything needed to prepare a nourishing meal or a simple indulgence to enjoy slowly on the deck, surrounded by the sounds of the bush. Outdoors, a deep bath invites guests to soak beneath open skies, immersed in the landscape.
Evenings at The Bivouac are particularly peaceful. As night settles in, the soundtrack of the bush emerges – crickets in the grass, the gentle rustle of wallabies and pademelons moving through the undergrowth, and occasionally a possum on the roof. Guests may hear Burt, a well-fed local possum whose nightly wanderings have become one of the charming quirks of staying in the bush.
At times, there may be some distant road noise from behind the cabin. The double-glazed windows help soften this when closed, ensuring the space remains calm and comfortable.
While The Bivouac is designed as a place to slow down and unwind, complimentary Wi-Fi is available should guests wish to stay connected. Whether settling in with a book, enjoying the warmth of the fire, soaking under the stars, or planning the next East Coast adventure, the cabin offers a quiet and restorative base in the Tasmanian bush.
Other things to note
NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN OR PETS.
MAXIMUM 2 GUESTS.
Water
We designed this cabin with as minimal environmental impact as possible. The house is on rainwater. Please use water wisely- it is a precious resource. The tap in the kitchen sink has a filter, so we recommend you use this tap for your drinking water. The bathroom water is safe for washing and teeth brushing. In the bath you might notice the water has a slight colouration. This is just from tannins from leaf matter. The water is still clean.
Composting toilet
The toilet is easy to use and should not smell but make sure the lid is always down when not in use. If you wee, you can give the toilet a couple of sprays of nature flush and close the lid. If its number two, give it 10-15 sprays and a 1-2 heaped cups of sawdust sprinkled in there.
If it starts smelling, add 10-15 squirts of the nature flush and a heaped scoop of saw dust sprinkled into the toilet. This should help.
Remember to always keep the lid down when not using the toilet. We also strongly recommend you make sure the extractor fan in the shower is off when the lid is open to avoid sucking out the air in the toilet system.
If using the extractor fan above the stove, we recommend you close the bathroom door to avoid changing the air direction from the toilet.
