Peace and quiet

Guests say this home is in a quiet area.
Named for the nearby rugged and pristine Wadbilliga wilderness, Mountain Cottage is a retreat like few others. Build from mud-brick, it stays cool in the summer and absorbs the winter sun.

Mountain Cottage sits at the high point of Rock Lily's 100-acre bush block, looking NW into Wadbilliga National Park. It's ideally suited for a couple wanting time away from the rush of real-life and to retreat into the bush at a sustainably-managed property. It has a dog-friendly fenced yard.

The space
Imagine enjoying a few days away with everything you need at hand including your own kitchen and barbeque, real coffee, some breakfast basics provided (home baked sourdough loaf, 1l of local milk, butter, jam, and treats), some books and games, and dog-friendly accommodation. If things go right, you'll see abundant birdlife, wallabies, and maybe even wild deer!

Rock Lily is a dog-friendly property with a fenced yard attached to each cottage. Your animals must remain on-lead when out of the yard. We're in the bush and wouldn't want them wandering off or getting hurt.

There are air conditioning and fans for the warmer months and a wood heater for those cool evenings and chilly days. There is also a television with a DVD player, books, and games to keep you occupied.

Water for the cottages is supplied from a rainwater tank and is truly tasty!

All beds feature a high-quality Sleep Republic innerspring mattress with a wool and cotton cover, a wool doona that's perfect for all seasons, and a selection of pillows from feathery soft to strong and supportive all with quality linen.

If you have an infant, we can provide a portable cot and high chair on request.

The bathroom includes Egyptian cotton towels and quality products.

Bedrooms and living areas feature stained glass windows.

The fully-equipped kitchen in the cottage features electric cooking, a microwave, a Nespresso coffee machine, and all the utensils, crockery, and cutlery you'll need. Guests will need to bring the remainder of the supplies they need for their stay, given we are away from town.

Lounge areas have a comfortable three-seat sofa and a cowskin rug on the floor. The dining space has a room for you and your companions.

There is a laundry alcove on the outside of the cottage so you can wash during longer stays. Steel pegs and a collapsible basket are provided. The laundry also stores an outdoor broom and a web broom.

Neighbourhood highlights

Brogo is at the northern end of the Bega Valley, adjoining the Wadbilliga National Park. The environment is mostly eucalyptus and fern gullies where the rock lilies really do grow wild! Just 4km from Rock Lily is the Brogo Dam, ideal for bass fishing and water sports where you can swim, kayak, and paddleboard.

The region offers several beautiful towns where country pubs, cafes, antiques, and markets are easily accessed. Bega is just 25 minutes from us. The beach at Tathra is just 40 minutes away. Narooma, Tilba Tilba, and Cobargo are just a little way to the north, and south of us lie Merimbula, Pambula, and Eden, the former hub of the once-thriving whaling industry in Australia (and home of the very interesting Eden Killer Whale Museum).

If getting into the bush is your style, there are several NSW National Parks in the region. Some are presently restricted or closed due to the 2019-20 bushfires, while others are open to various extents. It’s worth checking before you go.

We encourage you to learn more about the Traditional Owners of the land we share. The Yuin nation extends north, south, and west of us across the region, and is centred on Gulaga near Wallaga Lake. Several local groups offer guided hikes on the mountain, where you can learn about the long and rich history of the Yuin people.
