The space
Step into a one-of-a-kind warehouse conversion in Melbourne’s absolute centre—perfect for shoppers, food lovers, and culture enthusiasts. This spacious, light-filled apartment (100+ sqm) is tucked away in a quiet laneway, surrounded by world-class dining, cafés, and hidden gems. Enjoy the city’s renowned laneway culture, with Brother Baba Budan’s famous coffee on one corner and Tipo 00—Gourmet Traveller’s top new restaurant—on the other.

Located on the top level of a historic 1887 building, the apartment features an open-plan design with a mezzanine bedroom, a statement bathroom with a sunken bath (not a spa), and a separate toilet. Expect Mid-Century Modern charm, a queen-size bed, Wi-Fi, TV, DVD, and full laundry facilities.

🚶 Walk everywhere – Southbank, Docklands, Fitzroy & Carlton are just minutes away.
🚋 Effortless transport – Trams and trains radiate from the city centre.
🚗 Parking – No on-site parking, but commercial car parks are nearby (Bourke Square, The Strand, Galleria). For stays of a week I may be able to arrange off-site parking.
📺 Featured in film & TV – This apartment was Ethan Hawke’s NYC loft in Predestination and appears in Loose Threads (Illy & G-Flip) and Surviving Summer (Netflix).

Neighbourhood highlights

The apartment is located in the centre of Melbourne, not just the CBD but the actual middle of everything. Plus, it is in a laneway, one of Melbourne's most beloved features, with two excellent cafes, one at each end, Brother Baba Budan and Manchester Press. Around the corner in Somerset Place, I recommend Captains of Industry, a semi-hidden upstairs cafe that's an oasis when the city is busy. The clock also includes Paris Cat jazz bar, Picolina premium ice cream shop, Miznon, the popular Israeli pita restaurant, Myrtle bar, Whitehart bar, Tipo 00 and Osteria Ilaria, two fantastic Italian restaurants. For incredible local gifts and souvenirs, visit Wilkins and Kent.

Rankins Lane is a small lane located in the central business district of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located between Bourke and Little Collins streets. The lane is known for its street art and trendy cafes.

The history of Rankins Lane dates back to the mid-19th century, when it was known as a hub for small businesses and warehouses. During this time, the lane was populated by merchants, tradespeople, and factory workers.

In the early 20th century, the lane began to decline as many of the small businesses closed down, and the area became run-down. The lane mainly remained abandoned until the late 20th century, when it began to undergo redevelopment.

In the 1990s, Rankins Lane was revitalised as a cultural hub with the opening of galleries, shops and cafes. The lane became known for its street art, and it quickly became a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.

Today, Rankins Lane is considered to be one of Melbourne's most vibrant and creative neighborhoods. It is home to a wide variety of independent businesses and offers a unique atmosphere that is different from the rest of the city.

I'm a Melbourne girl, a traveller and gardener with love for character-filled spaces and mid-century furniture. I've made bar and restaurant guides for many years, so I have loads of recommendations & provide printed guides for my guests to take home. Melbourne Central City Warehouse (Est. 1897) is my former home that I listed on Airbnb back in 2010. In 2022 I acquired Dunkeld Secret Garden (Est. 1875) having fallen in love with the Grampians.
