This boutique industrial retreat showcases creative design, historic features, and refined luxury — a curated space for travellers who appreciate beauty in every detail. Industrial flair meets heritage elegance in this self contained Subiaco basement apartment. Perfect for design enthusiasts, the space combines exposed textures, polished concrete floors, hand selected antique bricks, kitchenette and a cozy, artful atmosphere for an unforgettable stay.

The space
Architect designed private space with masses of room, privacy and stunning ensuite within a high end historic house.

Fairview is one of Subiaco's most iconic mansions, described by a leading heritage architect as "a delightful example of a late Gold Boom period", featured in the book "Western Towns and Buildings" and listed as a place of cultural heritage significance by the National Trust. Fairview has recently been renovated to a very high standard by award-winning architect Sam Teoh.

Enjoy the high end design, grace and charm of a bygone era by staying in a luxury basement suite in this treasured, authentic and classically elegant mansion.

Fairview is home to a nationally significant collection of women's art. Private tours of the art collection and stunning stained glass are available.

Guest access
Access is via the stunning stained glass front entry or rear doors which are accessed by walking through a private side entrance featuring a climbing rose covered lych gate with a hand painted 23-carat gold leaf Fairview sign. This takes visitors through Craige Matthews designed gardens featuring a wrought iron fountain and an exquisite stained glass bay window. This large, enchanting Federation Queen Anne villa was built in 1915 and has a commanding position in Subiaco's historic Chester's estate.

This stately and gracious getaway is located just minutes away from the city, Kings Park and Subiaco's delightful cafe, shopping and dining experiences.

For example, seven of Perth's top cafes, bars and restaurants are located just 50 meters walk away on what locals call "The Paris End" of stylish must-see Rokeby Road in Subiaco.

You will receive a full set of keys to access the house from the front or back.

Note, this is a hosted Airbnb and the host lives in the front of this historic house.

Note there is a separate lock on the door to the basement.

Other things to note
This industrial design self-contained basement apartment is huge. It is best suited to two adults but can also accommodate two younger children on a fold out double bed. This is all within one large room with an ensuite bathroom.
The apartment is in the basement of a large historic house and is a unique and well-designed space.
There is access to shared spaces containing the main kitchen, outdoor kitchen and laundry with washing machine and drying courtyard.
It is pet friendly with access to the courtyard and fenced rear back garden. At times, there are other guests on the property, and this is a hosted property where the host lives at the front of this large historic mansion.
In summary:
This is a charming romantic getaway in one of Subiaco's most iconic historic houses full of antiques, original artwork and hand-knotted Persian rugs.
It has recently been renovated by award-winning architect Sam Teoh to a high standard.
The bed is an iconic cannonball design, and these were typically raised high off the ground. This one honours that tradition.
The self-contained area is of an industrial design with polished concrete floors and recycled brick. It is located within a basement and even though the architect incorporated soundproof materials there may be the odd normal sound coming through from above. Being in a basement it is cool, snug and private with plenty of room.

If you are looking for something light and bright, sleeping up to six people, this is not for you. Try our light filled loft space instead on a separate listing. Or the cute and funky Stallion Box which is in the rear garden and has its own access off the back laneway, sleeps four people and is a totally self-contained building with access to a private courtyard.
If you have a large group, book all three spaces or the whole house.

Historic House Tours

The Stallion Box is also part of Open House Perth, an annual event that celebrates the best of architecture, design and the built environment in Perth and its surrounds. It gives visitors unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to Perth’s best places and spaces.

My work: CEO of my own Marketing, Public Relations and Public Speaking practice called 8M Media and Communications
I'm an international business speaker, author and consultant. I travel a lot so I know the value of a comfortable stay and local knowledge. I've lived in Subiaco for 30 years so I know all the secret spots the locals love. Everything from coffee at Boucla, a drink at Juanita's or a picnic in Kings Park are all just two minutes walk away. I love meeting people and my personal library is very extensive. I love renovating old houses and have a passion for conserving Perth's heritage. I have two properties available - the main house called "Fairview" and an architect designed outhouse conversion known as "The Stallion Box". You can follow both on Instagram @FairviewofSubiaco and @stallionbox. Book these together or separately depending on the size of your group. “I won’t promise you spick and span and sparkly,” says Thomas of the distinctive stay. “What I will promise you is an experience like no other—to recharge and revitalize your soul in an authentic 110-year old historic gentleman's mansion and heritage outhouse conversion!" “Today’s luxury travelers crave places with a personality that embraces their surroundings or tells a story and both "Fairview" and "The Stallion Box" do this with both style and history,” says Thomas. “If your taste in gardens, antiques and art is highly sophisticated, the unique design elements of "Fairview" and "The Stallion Box" will captivate and charm you when it comes to fusing comfort, space, and sense of place with a big dose of character," concludes Thomas.
