Welcome to A Thousand Pines, a beautifully restored late 1800s miner's cottage inspired by the Ballarat’s Gold Rush era. Within easy reach of the popular sight-seeing spots, go-to bars and eateries of Ballarat. Soak in our claw-foot tub then warm up in front of wood burner in the old-world sitting room. A library corner will enrich you and a hidden TV and vintage board games for a friends to entertain you. To top it off, a garden awaits you to enjoy a coffee in the am or a wine the in pm.

The space
Once upon a time in Ballarat, there stood a white cottage with no name. On this winter's day in 1886, the chimney breathes little puffs of smoke into keep the cold at bay. The picket fence invites you in. Walking towards the gate of the picket fence is a man in his digger's wardrobe. He wipes a cool sweat from his brow, tired from another day in the mine. He stops at the gate, admiring the impressive pencil pines standing guard at the cottage's entrance, with Black Hill mine looming in the distance...

This little cottage later became A Thousand Pines, and we welcome you into the restored home filled with precious wonders of the days past.


The Black Hill Reserve and Mountain Bike Trails are walking distance from the cottage and plenty of space to store bikes and activity eqiupment.

Within five minutes of Sovereign Hill, Ballarat CBD, bars and restaurants. If the markets, lazy walks around Lake Wenderee and the Botonical Gardens are your thing, they are a 10 minute drive away.

When you’ve exhausted all the town has to offer for the day (or night), you can return home to a soak in our claw-foot tub in the heated-tile bathroom. There is a shower-over-bath, an antique Curiosty Cabinet, luxe bath linen and hairdryer.

The woodburner draws you into the old-world sitting room, complete with a hidden TV with streaming channels, and a velvet Chesterfield sofa. Entertainment abounds with vintage board games, movies and books. Or simply turn off the lights to indulge in the romance of a candlelit space.

Our little library corner holds tales of Goldrush time and chronicles that will enrich your knowledge of this significant moment in Ballarat’s history. For those who prefer something lighter, you’ll find poetry, historical homes guides, essays, fictional narratives and even a few children’s books dotted around the cottage.

Prepare a Calming Love Tea or Grounded Pleasures hot chai and climb into the bed and relax on the Koala mattresses. Black-out blinds, wall heaters and luxe bedding will ensure a solid night's rest.

Enjoy your breakfast around the kitchen table with Smeg appliances and the staple Australian spreads are always stocked in the green kitchen dresser.

Step through the french doors and into the fenced back garden with a lovely table and chairs and fairy lights. Further undercover seating in the front garden (also fully fenced).

A washing machine and dryer are located in the outbuilding. Laundry power, table top ironing board, iron is drying rack provided.

Guest access
Guests have exclusive access to the entire property except one housekeeping room in the outbuilding.

Check in from 3pm and check out is at 11am.

If you wish to arrive earlier or stay later we recommend booking an additional night.

Other things to note
For people with mobility difficulties, please note the claw foot bath is step-in.
