Your guide to Hamilton Island

All About Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is situated between Queensland’s north coast and the Great Barrier Reef, just under 900 kilometres north of the state capital Brisbane. It is one of the 74 tropical islands in the Coral Sea and is the largest inhabited island in the Whitsundays. The Island measures just over five square kilometres, with more than 80 percent of it being natural tropical bushland, and it is home to many native Australian animals and birdlife.

With its white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters, Hamilton Island is one of Australia's most sought-after holiday destinations. It is a convenient base from which to explore the nearby Whitehaven Beach, the Great Barrier Reef, and the famous Heart Reef, a stunning coral composition naturally formed in the shape of a heart. The Island’s most prominent beach is Catseye Beach. It is well known for its scenic points and natural beauty, and from here you can enjoy the abundance of water activities on offer.

The best time to stay in a holiday rental in Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is always a great place to visit, thanks to its year-round tropical climate. With temperatures rarely dropping to the cooler end of the thermometer, there really isn’t a bad time to visit. If there was a best time to go, it would probably be from August to October when the days are filled with consistent warm sunshine and the nights are milder, perfect for al fresco dining. In August, Hamilton Island Race Week comes to the Whitsundays, when about 250 yachts arrive in the Island’s marina for a week of sailing and festivities. Whenever you decide to visit, you will find a wide selection of holiday apartments, as well as houses and villas for rent on Hamilton Island, to suit all tastes and budgets.

Top things to do in Hamilton Island

Great Barrier Reef

Hamilton Island is a convenient gateway to Australia’s world-famous Great Barrier Reef. From the island there are a number of options you can book, including full day snorkeling or diving tours that will take you to renowned dive sites nearby, such as Stepping Stones, Paradise Lagoon, and Manta Ray Drop Off. From here you will be able to witness all the wonders of the reef and its marine life.

Whitehaven Beach

Take the 40-minute boat ride from the Island to Whitehaven Beach — a seven-kilometre stretch of beach that is consistently named as one of the best beaches in the world. Whitehaven boasts white silica sand, which is among the purest in the world, and crystal-clear waters. At the northern end of the beach is Hill Inlet, a protected inlet where the tide shifts the sand and water to create a beautiful fusion of colours.

Dent Island

Dent Island is just a five-minute boat ride from Hamilton Island and ferries leave every hour. With its green rolling hills and beautiful walking tracks, it's ideal for exploring the natural surroundings and wildlife. The island’s calm waters make it a great location to enjoy kayaking. Dent Island is also home to Hamilton Island’s golf course.
